"Traditional music and song from Ireland delivered with grace, passion, pride and skill by undoubted masters of the music"
Irish traditional band Altan are recognised as giant figures within the world of folk music. They forged their musical skills in kitchen and pub sessions in their native Donegal some twenty years ago. Those modest beginnings have given way to international success. Altan are one of Ireland's finest ever musical exports- selling over 1 million albums and filling concert halls from Dublin to Sydney. They maintain a touring schedule that has grown the international audience for quality Irish music and while they've performed for royalty and various Presidents and world leaders still return to their roots and play those same pub sessions when time allows.
Led by charismatic fiddle player and singer, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the band play a music that while solidly rooted in the past is, at the same time, a contemporary and living music. Spirited jigs and reels that defy you not to tap your toes are offset by poignant and beautiful ballads in Irish and English. Altan provide a live music experience that combines energy and poignancy, joy and tenderness but ultimately one that reasserts the immense charm, attraction and drive in great traditional music.
Altan have garnered numerous awards and accolades, including a Best Group at the BBC Folk Awards, they guested on albums with artists like as Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill and Mary Black, they've headlined the Hollywood Bowl and wowed festivals all over the world. Their most recent album, the tenth in their twenty year long career, Local Ground is released on the Vertical label in the UK. The Irish post office will honour Altan's contribution to Irish music by featuring them on a stamp to be issued in October 2006
.
